Tawny Owl

Tawny Owl

Tawny owls are the UK’s biggest common owl. They like woodland, parks and gardens.
The famous “too-wit too-woo” call most of us associate with owls in general is actual made by a male and female Tawny Owl calling to each other. The female makes a ‘too-wit’ sound and the male answers with ‘too-woo’!

They mainly eat voles and mice and tend to nest in hallow trees.
We have more than one nesting pair of Tawny’s on the farm, with one pair nesting a short distance from the farmyard.

Listen out for the short 'ke-wik' contact call and the quavering 'hoo, hu-hooo' advertising call
